Yogyakarta is not only holding a special region title in Java and in Indonesia. As a true home of the Javanese culture, Yogyakarta expresses itself as such artsy and cultural city, also holds title as one of the most famous tourist spots in Indonesia.

Where Culture Dwells

Yogyakarta is a center of art and education that also offers some of the best cultural attractions in the central part of Java island with a wide range of tourist facilities. Furthermore, the city also gained the “Special Region” status, thanks to the Sultanate of Hamengkubuwono, which has ruled the area since 1755 and helped the nation during the difficult times of Dutch colonization as well as the fight of Independence. Here are some of our recommended places to visit in Yogyakarta.

A trip to Yogyakarta will not be completed if you haven’t visit Malioboro Street. This mandatory attraction is the biggest shopping street in Yogyakarta and it spans around one-kilometer long. In between the sidewalks, you will see various merchants, selling many souvenirs. The shops vary from traditional local shops to big shopping centers. Local vendors are spread along the sidewalks in Malioboro, and you can choose from many types of souvenirs: batik clothes (traditional cloth painted with wax), wayang (Javanese puppets), and many more. Like many traditional markets in Indonesia, you can also bargain with the local vendors, but in Malioboro street sometimes you must bargain to get cheaper prices.

If you are interested to learn more about the deep cultural roots of Yogyakarta then make your way to the “Keraton Kasultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat” or also known as Yogyakarta Palace. This palace is not only the place where the king and his family live but also a main hub of art and cultural development of Java, as well as the flame guard of the culture. At this place, tourists can learn and see directly on how the Javanese culture continues to live and be preserved.

If you are seeking for a natural tourism that is not far from the main city of Yogyakarta, then Kaliurang is certainly a good choice. Kaliurang is tourist paradise located on the slopes of Mount Merapi and is famous for its cool ambience. This tourist spot is also famous for its romantic vibe and is perfect for honeymoon. In addition, the Ullen Sentalu Museum in Kaliurang is also an interesting place to visit if you want to see the reminiscing history of the Yogyakarta Special Region.
